Bassist Tim Rex deserves congratulations on succeeding in luring Graeme Lyall and Tony Gould into a studio, especially Lyall, who has been a shy performer in recent years. On a borrowed saxophone, he produces the lovely sound quality and accuracy of pitch that made him a great favourite of jazz audiences over the last fifty years. Tony Gould, Lyall’s close friend and long-term musical collaborator, shows the pianistic form that has made him first-choice accompanist for many Australian and visiting international stars. Gould’s lovely touch and sensitive improvising are everywhere on this album. Rex shows his ability to understand the requirements of an accompanist in a setting such as this, complementing the delicate work of the other performers."
